10 Iconic Disney Characters Missing from Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter
The first chapter of the new trading card game, Disney Lorcana, features some iconic characters, but there are also some that are missing.
Resume:
- Despite having a wide variety of cards featuring characters from many classic Disney films, some iconic characters are missing from Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter.
- The game focuses on animated characters, with the exception of franchises such as Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean, and no characters from subsidiary Pixar have appeared.
- Disney Lorcana's omissions, such as Dumbo, Tarzan, Bambi, and Snow White, seem special and may appear in future chapters.
The new trading card game Disney Lorcana debuts with a wide variety of cards featuring figures from many classic films, but several iconic Disney characters are actually missing from The First Chapter. Considering the huge list of cultural figures under the Disney umbrella, it's not too surprising that not every fan favorite would make the cut. Heavy hitters that were not included seem likely to appear in future chapters of the game.
Not every memorable Disney character would have been a natural inclusion in Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter. The game keeps the focus on animated characters, leaving franchises like Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean out of the picture. No characters from subsidiary Pixar have appeared, although some CGI animated films from Walt Disney Animation Studios have made the cut. Even with these limitations, some of Disney Lorcana's omissions seem peculiar.
10 Marie
Marie may not have the richest complexity of any Disney character to grace the big screen, but the spoiled princess (in spirit) of The Aristocats is still a common fan favorite. Fluffy white fur and a perfect pink nose translate the cuteness inherent in every kitten quite effectively, and there's no denying that she's sophisticated and talented at a young age. Add to that her surprising resilience in the face of adversity, and it's no surprise that Marie has attracted a following that makes her exclusion from Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter surprising.
9 Dumbo
When it comes to adversity, few Disney characters have faced more than Dumbo. His journey may not be the most life-threatening, but he does endure an unusual amount of brutal brutality. But above all, it is the oversized ears for which he was once bullied that have kept Dumbo in the spotlight. With a popular ride at Walt Disney World to his name, it's certainly a bit strange that Dumbo couldn't get a single entry among all the cards in Disney Lorcana.
8 Tarzan
Tarzan may not be as marketable as a cute animal or a beautiful princess, but the film that bears his name is fondly remembered for combining a strong story, beautiful animation and a memorable soundtrack by Phil Collins. It's not hard to imagine a Disney Lorcana card decorated with dynamic art of Tarzan swinging from a vine or surfing along a branch. If Disney's other late '90s leading man, Hercules, can make it into The First Chapter, Tarzan's time to shine will surely come eventually.
7 Bambi
The 1942 film Bambi represented a quantum leap in animal animation, aiming for even greater realism than Dumbo and centering key sequences around events such as a young deer's struggle to walk. The young deer himself remains one of Disney's cutest characters, with a wide-eyed naivety that makes him instantly endearing, even as it sets up the sad elements of the story. A Bambi map would also make a great visual showcase, as the forest environments can tap into the same natural beauty as several of the most striking maps in Disney Lorcana.
6 Pinocchio
The recent spate of new Pinocchio adaptations shows how eternally compelling the doll's story is, and no rendition has become as entrenched in pop culture as Disney's animated film. A Disney Lorcana Pinocchio card would have lots of fun options for skills related to the doll's iconic quirks. Pinocchio's path may have been wayward for a while, but the courage he eventually shows should definitely earn him a place.
5 Jiminy Cricket
Jiminy Cricket may only be Pinocchio's conscience, but he seems an even more natural choice for the focus on the magic that defines Disney Lorcana's unique rules. The steadfast grasshopper's song "When You Wish Upon a Star" has become a symbol of Disney's ideals of dreams and faith, and his dapper appearance is the perfect blend of old-fashioned and timeless. A conscience may be a small voice, but it still deserves careful attention.
4 Tiana
Tiana may not have spent as long in the princess canon compared to some of Disney's most iconic characters, but she worked harder to earn a spot than many. Few would have the hustle to make her dream of a magnificent restaurant come to life, a journey that requires much more than just kissing a frog. The villain of Princess and the Frog, Dr. Facilier, already has several Disney Lorcana cards, making it seem like Tiana's inclusion in the trading card game is only a matter of time.
3 Alice
Alice is another main character in a movie with side characters that came into play first, introducing both the Hatter and the Kolderkat. The inclusion of just one of Wonderland's wacky residents may be a coincidence, but adding two seems like a violation of the girl who fell down the rabbit hole. Her wide variety of misadventures would make for plenty of fun card ideas, not least the effects of the magical food and drink she shouldn't have touched in the first place.
2 Winnie the Pooh
Few characters are as beloved as everyone's favorite Bear with Very Little Brain, which makes the exclusion of Winnie the Pooh from Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter particularly notable. Disney's rendition of Pooh in a bright red shirt is even more culturally ubiquitous than Ernest Shepard's original illustrations, and his delight in a little smackerel of honey is magical enough to warrant a card. Just as Pooh sticks always emerge from under the bridge eventually, it seems inevitable that Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood will eventually be added to the trading card game.
1 Snow White
It may have all started with a mouse, but a certain princess played no small role in making Disney a phenomenon. Disney's first animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, stunned Hollywood with beautiful animation and memorable songs that showed how powerful tool animation can be. Snow White's absence from the new trading card game is a particularly notable exclusion, earning her status as a truly iconic character missing from Disney Lorcana.
