Malia Ewart can tame colors like King Triton tames the seas. Find out more about her process and how she illustrated this spark.
You have to bring to life a version of a character from a prequel. Tell us what was going through your mind when you heard you would be drawing this version of Triton.
Malia:: I was super excited, as Triton is one of the father figures I adored most in animation growing up. In the prequel we see his playful youth and a silly side that he isn't afraid to show!
How do you study a character's movement/posing/anatomy before you start sketching?
Malia: I always collect a huge pile of reference photos when I start a new project, but the art directors on the project are great and provide us with all this material at launch. I certainly enjoy watching some clips from the film, both for research and pleasure.
What is your favorite Disney Theme Park? And why?
Malia: Gotta continue with my old stomping grounds, Disney California Adventure Park! I was a Cast Member there for almost four years and Cars Land really holds a special place in my heart.
Which Disney story or character has inspired you the most?
Malia: I don't think I can list them all here, there are so many! If I had to choose just one, I'd say Rapunzel from Tangled . She is such a free spirit and has definitely inspired me to go out of my comfort zone, take risks and live life to the fullest.
